You
may have heard of recent instances of Church leaders seeking forgiveness
on behalf of Christians everywhere for wrongs committed in the name
of Christ. Apologies have been made for poor treatment of Jews throughout
history, for lack of opposition to policies of totalitarian regimes,
for the silencing of Galileo, for violence in opposing opposing
viewpoints. Al of these declarations are important parts of preparation
for the Jubilee Year.
At
the same time, inroads have been made with other Christian Churches.
The Vatican and the Lutheran churches have found through dialogue
that the historical divisions on certain doctrinal issues are no
longer the disagreements we once thought they were.Dialogue with
Orthodox Christian churches, comprising the second largest group
of Christians after the Catholic Church, progress slowly but significantly.
Christian unity, once thought impossible, is now being openly discussed.
