Andrew died in the first centruy. He was a brother of Simon Peter and disciple of John the Baptist; tradition holds he preached north of the Black Sea and in Greece and died, bound to an X-shaped cross, at Patras in Greece. He is the patron of Russia and Scotland and of the Greek Church.
