St. Augustine

August 28

IAugustine (died 430) was born in Tagaste in Roman Africa. After a dissolute early life, he was baptized at age 33 by St. Ambrose. Later he was elected bishop of Hippo in Northern Africa, combated various heretical sects and is most noted for his writings, including his Confessions and the City of God. More than 500 of his homilies still exist and he isconsidered a father of monastic life in the West, with his rule being ubserved by more than 150 different communities today.
