Teresa of Avila (died 1582) was a Spanish mystic who, with St. John of the Cross, founded the reformed (discalced_ Carmelite friars and nuns. She authored The Way of Perfection, Interior Castle and an autobiography which is considered one of the classics of Spanish literature and spirituality. She was the first woman to be declared a doctor of the Church.
