A
Belgian-born missionary to Hawaii, he was ordained in the Kingdom
of Hawaii in 1864. He volunteered to serve the abandoned leper colony
of Molokai, wher ehe worked for 16 years as pastor, physician, undertaker
and sheriff, founding two orphanages and constantly pressuring the
Royal government to provide for the lepers. Protestant missionaries
undertook a smear campaign against him, but many rose to his defense,
including Robert Louis Stevenson. He contracted leprosy in 1884
and continued working among the lepers until his death in 1889.
