John of the Cross died in 1591. He was born in Fontiveros, Spain around 1542. A mystic and poet, he was an ally of St. Teresa of Avila in reforming the Carmelite order. He authored many works, including the Ascent of Mount Carmel, the Dark Night of the Soul, The Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love.
