Pope John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) was born in 1963 and reigned from 1958 to 1963. He is perhaps the greatest and most beloved pope of modern times, who decided to convene and guided the first part of the Second Vatican Council. He said we are not on earth "to be museum keepers, but to cultivate a flourishing garden of life." He saw the Spirit at work in the end of colonialism, the emancipation of the working classes and the promotion of women in society. He saw the Council as "New Pentecost." He initiated ecumenical dialogue and defended freedom of belief.
