Maximilian Kolbe August 14 Maximilian Kolbe (died 1941 at Auschwitz by lethal injection) was born near Lodz, Poland. He was a Franciscan who founded the Militia of Mary immaculate and was a missionary in Japan. He offered his life to the Nazi camp commandant in exchange for another prisoner chosen at random in reprisal for an escape.
