September 21

The gospel of Matthew was composed about the year 85 and draws upon Aramaic traditions associated with this name. Intended largely for a Jewish Christian audience, it seeks to portray Christianity as compatible with and a continuation of Jewish tradition. Tradition holds that Matthew preached in Judea and in Ethiopia, where he was martyred.
