The Death of St. Monica
by Benozzo Gozzoli, c. 1465

August 27

Monica (died 387 at Ostia, the port of Rome) was born in Tagaste in Roman Africa. After 30 years of prayer, she finally converted her dissolute pagan husband and, under the guidance of St. Ambrose, she converted her eldest son, Augustine, who eventually became one of the greatest saints of the Western Church. She is the patroness of mothers.
