Junípero
Serra (d.1784) was born in Petra, Majorca, Spain. He was a Franciscan
missionary who arrived in New Spain in 1750 and established 9 of
the 21 California missions, baptized over 6,000 native people and
is recognized as a builder of California. Under his leadership of
the missions, many of California's cities were named. As the "Apostle
to California," his is one of two statues representing California
in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington. He is interred in Mission
Santa Barbara.
